Reconnect with Dr Michael Rigby Part II

Published on December 10, 2021

In part two of Dr Michael Rigby’s Reconnect interview, discover his most notable experiences, memories, and wise words as he candidly shares his journey with the Brompton family since 1979.

Dr Rigby has had an extraordinary career spanning over 40 years. Since the early 80’s he has touched the lives of many and encountered lots colleagues along the way, some of whom have gone on to become mentors and great friends. Other colleagues have even had hospital wards named after them: Sir Reginald Wilson and Jane Somerville. He has even been a part of three hospital mergers, resulting in the successful expansion of our hospitals' capabilities.

Notably, in 1991 he met Her Majesty The Queen when she came to open the new Royal Brompton Hospital, and he showed her around the paediatric and ITU wards. “You have to say, whoever you might be, it would feel like an honour”, Dr Rigby explains, smiling.

Then from the year 2000 onwards, he describes how many new and dynamic younger paediatric cardiologists, such as Professors Piers Daubeney and Alain Fraissé arrived, replacing the old who have since moved on.
