Reconnect with Dr Fernando Riesgo Gil
Dr Fernando Riesgo Gil completed his medical training in Spain, passionate about specialising in advanced heart failure and transplantation. This vision drove him to pursue a fellowship in Canada, where he developed a strong interest in congenital heart disease which led him to join Royal Brompton Hospital in 2015. After a year, he transitioned to Harefield Hospital, where he took on the role of clinical lead for heart transplantation.
Harefield’s advanced medical practices in heart failure, mechanical support, and complex transplantation exceeded Dr Riesgo Gil’s expectations, and he greatly appreciated the support received from the team. Despite the challenges of learning a new medical system in the UK and having to overcome a language barrier, he found the team around him to be exceptionally supportive.
Over the past decade, the hospital’s unique clinical practices and exceptional teamwork approach have given him the opportunity to dedicate himself to become an expert cardiologist in heart failure and transplantation.
He explains, “looking back, every peak we've had has been because we really excel in teamwork. And that's the first thing you feel: that everybody is working towards the same end and aim. We have managed to change a few things at Harefield recently that made us a very active and successful transplant program. And that was done with collective effort.”
