Reconnect with Professor Anita Simonds
Professor Anita Simonds, honorary consultant in respiratory and sleep medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital, shares her professional journey in this reflective interview.
After studying medicine at University College Hospital, her early experience in anaesthetics and intensive care led to a growing interest in respiratory medicine. Drawn by the Brompton’s reputation and history, she joined as a senior house officer in the 1980s and became a consultant shortly after in 1990.
Her work contributed to the early adoption and expansion of CPAP therapy and the development of the hospital’s home ventilation service - from several dozen patients to several thousand. She also played a central role in building the sleep service into one of national significance.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, as President of the European Respiratory Society (2020-2021), she worked with international colleagues to help inform the UK’s clinical response.
