Reconnect with Professor John Pepper

Published on February 4, 2025

As a boy born to a naval family, Professor John Pepper had no idea his young family connection to the Royal Brompton Hospital would lead to a successful 30-year career there.

He completed medical school at the University of Cambridge and Guy’s Hospital where he was inspired to specialise in cardiothoracic surgery.

In 1990 he was invited by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub to join Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, and he thoroughly enjoyed working with exceptionally talented colleagues who had a willingness to consider new projects and clinical trials that would have enormous benefit to patients.

Professor Pepper’s research interests included the development of an external support around the aorta, specific to individuals with Marfan syndrome. Globally over 1,100 Marfan patients have been treated, and in 2024 Professor Pepper became a patron of the Marfan Trust.

He was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2015 for his service and dedication to heart and lung surgery, in Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday honours.
