Reconnect with Professor Dudley Pennell

Published on October 15, 2026

From an early dream of becoming a doctor to a distinguished career in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), Professor Dudley Pennell reflects on more than 40 years at the forefront of cardiovascular research.

After studying medicine at Cambridge and completing his clinical training at St Thomas’s Hospital and the London Chest Hospital, Professor Pennell joined Royal Brompton Hospital for a PhD research fellowship in CMR. At a time when the field was rapidly developing, he recognised the importance of research in advancing clinical practice and establishing an international reputation.

Throughout Professor Pennell's career, he has published almost 750 research papers and raised nearly £100 million in research funding. He established a cardiac MR teaching course for junior cardiologists in 1996, which continues today, and was a founding member of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, helping to establish training standards and support the growth of the field internationally.

His contributions have been recognised with the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Gold Medal and his election as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Reflecting on the impact of research, Professor Pennell explains how scientific advances can transform clinical practice and improve outcomes for patients:

“The point of those papers is it changes clinical practice substantially when you can show that this new technique diagnoses and manages a condition better than the other techniques which have been [used] in the past. The patients benefit and the management pathway changes substantially.”
