Reconnect with Robert Craig

Published on February 26, 2026

From joining the NHS graduate management training scheme in 1988 to dedicating 31 years to specialist heart and lung care, Robert Craig’s professional journey with Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals has been deeply meaningful.

Early in his career, he developed an interest in specialist NHS services and applied for a role at Harefield, partly inspired by the world-renowned transplant pioneer Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub.

At Harefield, he enjoyed the focus on clinical excellence and pioneering research, which gave him a real sense of belonging. The smaller hospital had a strong family feel, with teams unafraid to push boundaries. He built relationships with exceptionally talented colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends.

For Robert, it has always been about the people at Royal Brompton and Harefield; their commitment, groundbreaking innovations, and shared purpose. The focus on specialist services created an environment of impressive expertise, attracting staff from across the world who actively chose to be part of these world-renowned hospitals.

Robert comments: “this will sound cheesy, but I think of [the hospitals] as home. They are a home from home. They are great places. They've done extraordinary things in the times I've been here, and I've been privileged to watch them.”
